How To Choose The Best Arch Support Orthotics

By Phyllis Schroeder

A lot of people, millions actually, suffer from some form of fallen arches. Flat feet are more common than most people think. About thirty per cent of people suffer from this condition. It is not seen as a serious condition, but it is a common problem presented to podiatrists. Fortunately, with arch support orthotics sufferers can hope to gain relief from the symptoms.

Babies are all born without developed arches. It is only later in infancy that they develop. In some cases, however, the arches simply never develop and the individual concerned will just have to accept the fact that they will have to live with flat feet. The development of arches can be encouraged in young children but then the parents need to recognize the problem at a very early age.

Flat feet is not just a problem attributable to birth. Many people develop the condition later on in life. Obese people routinely develop fallen arches. Those with hypertension and diabetes are also prone to develop the condition. The tendons and muscles in the feet of older people deteriorate and this can also lead to fallen arches. Luckily, the condition is not dangerous at all.

There are a few surgeons that will attempt to correct flat feet by implanting a bone in the ankle. Most experts agree, however, that this is a risky and dangerous operation. The risks are simply not worth it. The use of special insoles is a far better option. Best of all, these insoles are affordable and they can often be used is several pairs of shoes.

There are also some exercises that can do much to strengthen the muscles and tendons in the feet. Podiatrists advise their patients to walk barefoot as often as possible, preferably in sand. It also helps to perform regular stretching exercises. The feet should be rotated from left to right and back again and the toes should be spread as far apart as is possible.

Prevention is, of course, always better than cure. It is vital to look after the feet from an early age. It is most important to wear only shoes that fit properly and to avoid using shoes for purposes other than what they are designed for. This is especially the case for sports people. Shoes should provide proper support to the ankles and the arches.

When buying insoles it is important to buy quality products. Many companies sell inferior products that may actually cause more harm than good. It may be a good idea to ask advice from a general practitioner or from a qualified podiatrist. Quality products not only last longer but they also provide better support. Inferior products do not last and they may lead to additional problems with the feet.

A simple device such as an insole can provide people with fallen arches much comfort. It is definitely worthwhile considering. While the condition cannot be cured, it is certainly manageable and much can be done to relieve the symptoms, such as back ache and feet fatigue.
